Garage Door Stuck Halfway Open?
Half open, half closed, and going nowhere. A door that stops mid-travel is telling you something mechanical has let go, and every extra press of the button makes it worse.
Quick Answer
A garage door stuck halfway has usually hit something mechanical rather than electrical: a roller out of its track, a cable that has slipped its drum so one side sits higher than the other, a spring that has lost tension so the door gets too heavy past a certain point, or an obstruction or bent rail at the exact spot it stops. Openers also stop mid-travel when their force limits are set too tight or the drive gear is stripping. Stop running the door. A half-open door with a failed cable or spring can drop, and repeated attempts turn one bent part into several. Re-seating the door and straightening track, re-rigging a cable and replacing a spring are separate jobs, each quoted after diagnosis and before any work starts.
Common Causes
Roller out of its track
The door binds where the roller left the guide and can't travel past it. It often follows a knock, or a worn roller that has gone flat on one side; our guide to garage door rollers explains how to spot a worn one.
Cable slipped or snapped
One side keeps lifting while the other stalls, so the door goes crooked and wedges in the tracks. You can usually see the slack cable hanging, and it needs garage door cable repair before the door is run again.
Spring losing tension
A tired or partly broken spring can lift the door for the first stretch, then run out of help. The door stalls at roughly the same height each time.
Obstruction or bent rail
A screw, stone or twisted section of track stops travel at one exact point. The repeatable stopping height is the clue.
Force limits set too tight
The opener reads normal friction as an obstruction and stops for safety. Common after a door has stiffened up through a dusty summer without a service.
Drive gear stripping
The motor keeps running but stops driving under load. You'll often hear the pitch change at the point it gives up.
What You Can Check Safely
Safe to check yourself
- Stop using the door and note the exact height it stops at each time
- From a safe distance, look for a slack or hanging cable on either side
- Check whether the door is sitting square or leaning to one side
- Look along both tracks for a bend, a gap or a roller out of its guide
- Keep cars, pets and children out from under a half-open door
Do not attempt
- Do not press the button again to help it through; that is how one bent bracket becomes a track rebuild
- Do not pull the manual release on a door stuck part-way; without spring support it can fall
- Do not try to lever, hammer or lift the door back into its track by hand
- Do not park under or drive through a partly open door while you wait
When to Call a Technician
Call a technician straight away if any of the following apply:
- The door is leaning, crooked or wedged at an angle
- A cable is loose, frayed or off its drum
- It stops at the same height every time
- You can see a roller sitting outside its track
- The motor labours, changes pitch or clicks at the stopping point

Frequently Asked Questions
This one is rarely a DIY fix, because a door stuck mid-travel is usually unbalanced and unsupported. Stop using it, note the height it stops at and whether it's sitting square, and look for a slack cable. A technician then takes the tension off safely, re-seats the rollers, straightens any bent track and replaces whatever failed. It's a different job depending on whether the door came off its track or a cable let go, so book a repair for the jammed door and we quote once we can see which.
Two families of cause. Mechanical: a roller out of its guide, a slipped cable, a spring that has lost its help partway up, or a bent section of track. Electrical: force limits set too tight, so the opener reads ordinary friction as an obstruction and stops for safety, or a drive gear stripping under load. If it stalls at the same height every time, it's almost certainly mechanical.
One side higher than the other means the lifting force is no longer even, which points at a cable that has snapped or jumped its drum, or a spring on that side that has gone. The door is now racking in its tracks and each cycle bends more. Leave it exactly where it is and call: the cable repair is quoted before we start, and we re-level the door as part of the job.
A sectional door that sags or bows in the middle has usually lost the stiffening strut on its top panel, or the opener's arm is pulling on a panel that was never braced for it. It can also mean the door is out of balance so the opener is dragging it. Left alone, the panel creases and the door starts binding in the tracks. It's usually repairable with a strut or a reinforced bracket, if the panel hasn't folded.
It's safer than forcing it, but treat the space underneath as off limits. A door held up by a failing spring or a single remaining cable can come down quickly, and a double door is far heavier than it looks. Keep cars, kids and pets clear, don't walk under it, and if it's leaving your home unsecured overnight, call us. We attend after hours and can make it safe even if the full repair needs daylight and parts.
It depends what let go, so the price is set by the parts the door needs. Re-seating an off-track door and straightening the rails is one job; a snapped or derailed cable is another; a broken spring is another again. Worn rollers, often the underlying trigger, are usually replaced at the same time and are the cheap part. Door type and size, and whether you need us in standard hours or after hours, move it too. You get the exact figure after diagnosis and before any work starts.
