Garage Door Remote Stopped Working?
New battery in and still nothing? Before you buy another remote, find out whether the problem is the handset, the receiver in the motor, or something drowning out the signal.
Quick Answer
If your garage door remote is not working, press the wall button first: if the door responds there, the door and opener are fine and the fault is in the remote or the receiver. Change the battery, then try re-pairing the remote with the learn button on the opener's powerhead. If a fresh battery and re-pairing both fail, the usual culprits are a full memory on an older opener, a failing receiver board, or LED lights and other electronics drowning out the signal. Replacement remotes are supplied and programmed on one attendance, and that attendance covers as many remotes as you need, with the price confirmed before we start. If the wall button doesn't work either, the problem is the opener, not the remote.
Common Causes
Flat or weak battery
By far the most common, and not always obvious: a weakening battery often works up close for weeks before it stops. Holiday homes where the remote sits in a drawer for months are a classic.
Lost pairing or full memory
Power surges can wipe codes, and older units hold a limited number of remotes. Once the memory is full, a new remote won't take. Our guide to programming a garage door remote covers clearing and re-pairing on the common brands.
Failing receiver board
The classic sign is a remote that pairs happily, then drops out days later. Common on openers that have been running for many years.
Interference and range loss
LED garage lights, solar inverters and nearby transmitters raise the background noise. The tell is a remote that only works within a few metres.
Damaged or coiled antenna
The thin aerial wire hanging from the powerhead is the receiver's ear. Coiled up, cut short or tucked away, range collapses.
Water or impact damage
Remotes live in cars, pockets and boats. A cracked case or a soaking usually kills the board even if the buttons still click.
What You Can Check Safely
Safe to check yourself
- Press the wall button; if the door works there, the opener is fine and it's a remote or receiver issue
- Fit a fresh battery of the correct type, and check the contacts are clean and springy
- Test the remote standing right next to the motor; working up close means a range or interference problem
- Try a second remote if the household has one, which separates a dead handset from a dead receiver
- Check the antenna wire hangs loose and straight from the powerhead, not coiled or tucked up
Do not attempt
- Do not buy a cheap generic remote online before confirming your opener's brand and code system; many won't pair reliably
- Do not keep pressing the learn button repeatedly; on some units that wipes every stored remote
- Do not ignore a lost or stolen remote; until the motor's memory is cleared, it still opens your garage
When to Call a Technician
Call a technician straight away if any of the following apply:
- A new battery and re-pairing have both failed
- The remote pairs, then drops out again within days
- Range has shrunk to a few metres
- The opener's memory is full and won't accept another remote
- A remote has been lost or stolen and you need a replacement remote supplied and coded with the old one wiped

Until the opener's memory is cleared, that remote still opens your garage, and if it went missing with your address, treat it as urgent. Clearing and re-coding takes minutes.
Frequently Asked Questions
Either the remote isn't transmitting or the opener isn't receiving. Test with the wall button first: if the door works there, the opener and door are healthy and you're looking at a battery, a lost pairing, a receiver fault or interference. If the wall button does nothing either, the problem is the opener or its power, and the remote is a red herring. That one test saves most people buying a remote they didn't need.
Because the battery wasn't the fault. The usual suspects then are a lost pairing after a power surge, a full memory on an older opener, a failing receiver board, or interference from LED lights. Check the battery is the right type and seated the right way up, and that the remote doesn't have a lock slide nudged on in a pocket. We carry remotes and receivers for the common brands, so the fix is usually made on the spot.
On most Australian openers you press and release the learn or code button on the powerhead, often behind the light cover, then press the remote button within a few seconds until the light flashes or the unit clicks. The exact sequence differs by brand and age, and on some older units you must clear the whole memory first, which un-pairs every other remote in the house. Check the label and manual, or send us a photo of the powerhead.
Usually not. Switching off at the wall for a minute clears a frozen board and is worth trying, but the stored remote codes survive a power cut on most openers. Clearing them takes the learn button, normally held down until the light changes. If a remote only started working after the power came back, the board may be on its way out.
It comes down to the handset your opener takes and how many you want. Each remote is priced on its own, then there is one attendance to program them to your motor, and that single attendance covers as many as you want. If the receiver rather than the handset has failed, that's an opener repair and priced as one. On very old openers where remotes are no longer made, we quote a receiver upgrade against a new opener and let you choose. Every figure is confirmed before work starts.
Often, particularly for households with several drivers, a rental or a holiday home. A Wi-Fi kit on a compatible opener gives everyone control from their phone and shows whether the door was left open, and it ends the business of handing out and recovering remotes. Our guide to smart garage door openers covers which systems work with which motors.
