Garage Door Off Track?
Rollers out of their guides and panels leaning at an angle. An off-track door is one more press of the button away from bent rails and a much bigger repair.
Quick Answer
A garage door goes off track when its rollers are forced out of their guides, most often after the door closes onto an obstruction, takes a knock from a car, loses a cable so one side unloads, or wears its rollers flat until one jumps out. The door then leans, binds and can fall. Stop operating it immediately: every further attempt bends more track and can pull more rollers out. Re-seating the door, straightening the rails and replacing damaged rollers is quoted once we have seen the damage, and most jobs are finished in a single visit. If a cable let go as part of the failure, that is re-rigged and quoted with it.
Common Causes
Closing onto an obstruction
A bin, a bike or a bumper left in the opening twists the door as it lands. One of the most frequent causes of all.
Vehicle contact
Even a gentle nudge while reversing knocks the bottom panel out of line and levers its rollers clear of the guides. Boat trailers and caravans are frequent offenders.
Snapped or slipped cable
When one cable lets go the weight shifts sideways, and the unloaded side climbs straight out of its track. The door can't be re-seated until the lift cable is replaced and re-rigged.
Worn or flat-spotted rollers
Rollers that have worn flat wobble in the guide until one pops out under load. Cheap parts, expensive consequences; our guide to garage door rollers shows the signs of wear.
Bent rail or loose brackets
A track knocked out of line, or mounting brackets that have vibrated loose over years, gives the rollers an exit point.
Wind loading on an exposed opening
Wind gets under a partly open door on an exposed block and can flex it hard enough to unseat rollers.
What You Can Check Safely
Safe to check yourself
- Stop using the door immediately; don't press the button one more time
- From a distance, note which rollers are out and whether a cable has come loose
- Check whether the door is leaning, and which side is lower
- Keep people, pets and cars out from under and away from the door
- If the door is stuck open, treat your garage as unsecured until it's repaired
Do not attempt
- Do not run the opener again to try to straighten it; that is how one bent bracket becomes a full track replacement
- Do not hammer or lever the rollers back into the track by hand
- Do not release the trolley on a door that is part-way open and leaning
- Do not drive a vehicle through the opening while the door is unstable
When to Call a Technician
Call a technician straight away if any of the following apply:
- Any roller is visibly sitting outside its track, which needs a repair to get the door back on track
- The door is leaning, twisted or wedged at an angle
- A cable is hanging loose or off its drum
- The track is visibly bent, kinked or pulled away from the wall
- The door moved after an impact and hasn't run properly since

That leaves your garage unsecured and the door unstable, so doors that can't be closed go to the front of the queue. Outside our published hours we attend emergencies, and the after-hours rate is agreed before dispatch.
Frequently Asked Questions
This is one to leave alone. Putting a door back in its guides means taking the tension out of the system, supporting the door's weight while the rollers are re-seated, straightening any bent rail and then re-balancing, with a heavy panel that wants to fall and springs that are still loaded. Attempts with a crowbar reliably turn a straightforward repair into bent panels and new rails. Note which rollers are out, leave it as it is, and call.
In rough order: closing onto something left in the opening, a knock from a vehicle, a snapped cable unloading one side, rollers worn flat until one jumps the guide, and rails bent or brackets loosened over years. On an exposed block, wind getting under a part-open door adds another. Often two combine: worn rollers are the underlying weakness and the bin is what finally tipped it over.
A technician takes the tension off, supports the door, eases the rail open just enough to seat the roller, then checks every other roller, the track alignment and the door's balance before restoring tension. It isn't a home job because the door is heavy and unsupported at exactly the moment the rail is opened. If the roller popped out because it was worn, it's replaced too; rollers are the cheap part of the visit.
No. An off-track door is unstable, and the rollers still in their guides are carrying loads they weren't designed for. Running the opener again can pull more rollers out, bend the rails, twist panels or bring the door down. Treat the doorway as off limits, don't park under it, and if it's stuck open, call us. We attend after hours and can make it safe even when the full repair needs parts.
The price follows the damage. Re-seating the door, straightening the rails and checking every roller is the base job, and it costs more on a large or heavy door than a small single. Worn rollers replaced during the visit are the cheap part. A cable that failed and caused the derailment adds to it, and a panel bent in the process is the dearest item because the section has to be replaced. Standard hours or after hours moves it too. You get the exact figure after we've seen the damage and before any work begins.
