Opener and motor prices
The four prices that matter when an opener stops working, from our price list. Which one applies depends on what has actually failed, so we test before recommending a new motor.

A heavier door, or a roller door that needs a different drive, may sit at the top of the range. If you are fitting an opener to a door that has never had one, the opener installation cost guide covers that job.
What decides the cost of a new motor
The kind of door
A roller door's opener sits at the end of its drum, while a sectional or tilt door's hangs from the ceiling on a rail. They are different products, which is why we ask before quoting. Our motors page lists the brands we fit.
How heavy the door really is
An opener is sized to the door's weight. A door with tired springs feels heavier than it is, so we balance it first — otherwise a new motor works against the same problem that may have killed the old one.
Repairable, or end of life
Stripped gears, a burnt board or a failed limit switch can often be fixed. When the manufacturer no longer makes the parts, a new opener is the sensible spend; the opener repair page explains what we check.
Heat, salt and sun
Summer heat in a closed garage and salt off the estuary are hard on circuit boards. Openers on canal and beachfront homes often show board faults earlier than the same model inland.
The extras you choose
Spare remotes, smart control and a battery backup all add to the job. They are priced as their own lines, so you can pick what you want and leave the rest.
Is it the motor? Four common calls
The motor hums but the door stays put
Often stripped drive gears or a broken spring making the door too heavy. Gears can be repaired for $380–$490; a spring is priced separately. The motor not responding page walks through the checks.
Nothing happens when you press the remote
Try the wall button and a fresh battery first. If the wall button works, it is the remote, not the motor — a new one is $95 plus the $165 visit to code it.
The door goes down, then straight back up
Usually the safety beams are dirty or knocked out of line rather than the motor failing. That is a $150–$300 job at most, and sometimes just a wipe of the lenses.
An opener that has been fixed before and failed again
When an older opener needs a second board or gear set, the repair money is better put toward a new unit at $770–$990. We show you both prices before you choose.
Repair the opener or replace it?
We test first and only recommend a new motor when the old one is not worth saving. If the door itself is the problem, the repair cost guide covers springs, cables and tracks.
Repair is usually better when
- One part has failed and the brand still supplies it
- The opener is a model still on sale, or close to it
- It has not needed a major repair before
- The door is balanced and runs freely by hand
Replacement may be better when
- Parts for the model are no longer available
- It is the second or third major fault in a short time
- You want smart control and the old opener cannot take it
- The motor is underpowered for a heavier replacement door
How we price an opener job
Describe what the opener does
Humming, clicking, reversing or nothing at all — each one points to a different part.
Send the opener's label
A photo of the brand and model sticker tells us whether parts are still made and which replacement fits.
We test, then name the price
At the door we check the balance, the board and the drive, then give you the repair figure and the replacement figure side by side. You choose.
Fitted, set and handed over
A new opener goes up, the travel limits and force are set, every remote is coded and the safety-reverse is tested. The garage door service visit keeps it that way.

Frequently Asked Questions
$770–$990 for a new opener supplied, fitted and programmed, including GST and taking the old unit away. Where the fault is repairable, fixing the existing opener is $380–$490.
Sometimes. If the existing rail suits the new opener and is in good condition it may stay, but most brands design their motor and rail as a matched pair. We check what you have before quoting so you only pay for what the door needs.
It depends far more on use and on the door than on the brand. Moving a properly balanced door a handful of times daily, an opener can run for many years; one dragging a door with tired springs, or sitting in a hot, salty garage, wears out much sooner. A yearly service is the cheapest way to stretch it.
Grinding or clicking, a door that stalls partway, a motor that hums without moving, or an opener that needs several presses before it responds. Check the remote battery and the wall button first; our remote not working page lists the quick checks.
If the parts are still available and it has not failed before, usually yes — a repair at $380–$490 is well below the cost of a new unit. Once parts are scarce or it keeps failing, a new opener is the better spend.
We supply and fit Merlin, Jaytech, Superlift and Steel-Line openers, and our $770–$990 price covers the motor, fitting and programming. We would rather fit a unit we know suits the door it is going on, so ask us before buying one online.
